Wide spectrum to produce and storage hydrogen with an intrinsic security

Hydrogen as itself is not present in the environment thus; several processes need to be performed before using this fuel in any application. In this course, the part of the technology related to the production, purification and storage of hydrogen is studied in detail. Specifically, the points that are going to be described are:
Hydrogen production. With an emphasis on main technologies, like reformation and electrolysis and other important new processes.
Hydrogen purification. Listing the existent systems used and its applications for each case.
Hydrogen storage. Analysing different possibilities to storage hydrogen and distribute it to the final users.
Hydrogen handling. Showing the risks, detection and regulations, codes and standards for hydrogen security in its production, storage and use.
After finishing this course, the student will be able:

  • To identify each technology of production, how it works, its pros and cons.
  • To choose better purification processes and the requirements that they need and can be given.
  • To select the best option for hydrogen distribution.
  • To detect any risk or incident related to the hydrogen technology.

The qualification obtained is “Certificate of Knowledge in Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology for Technicians: Hydrogen production & handling”.

General information:
  • Each course is divided into two modules: the core module. And after the compilation the core module, the student starts to follow the specialisation module.
  • The course will require approximately 100 hours of student effort, of which there will be 40 hours dedicated to the core module and 60 hours to a specialisation module.
  • For the online part of the courses, the indicated date is the starting date of the course.
  • For the practical part of the course, (12/5/2017) the indicated date is the fixed date for the one-day practical session, which is taking place in-person.
  • The online course should be completed before the practical session

The context, components, system, the risks and maintenance

The transport sector is now the largest consumer of petroleum products, the second emitter of greenhouse gases and remains an important emitter of pollutants: HC, NOx, CO and fine particles. As an answer, manufacturers improved the post-treatment of engine gases and are developing the use of alternative fuels, electricity and hydrogen as energy sources. Among these solutions, the combined use of hydrogen and PEM fuel cells offers two advantages: zero local emissions and a larger autonomy compared to batteries. Following this idea, this course is designed to provide technical information about fuel cell vehicles and, very important, about safety aspects related to vehicle technology, workshop and working procedures. The course is therefore divided into several units that include:

  • The description of the transport sector and the reasons why new technologies become more affordable for the market
  • The basic principles of a PEM fuel cell for vehicle
  • Components related to the hydrogen system, from the high-pressure tank to the fuel cell
  • Components related to the EV, from the fuel cell to the electric machine
  • Overview of the powertrain as a system taking into account safety aspects, schematic diagrams and chassis design
  • Description of the vehicle maintenance taking into account safety aspects, ordinary maintenance, block diagrams, diagnostic and troubleshooting

After completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • Write a list of the components of a fuel cell powertrain and for each explains the technology, the role in the system and the associated safety device
  • Describe most usual chassis designs of fuel cell vehicles
  • Read and analyse the system operation through technical drawings: wiring & block diagrams
  • Relate to the safety aspects of hydrogen & high voltage
  • Demonstrate the ability to initiate troubleshooting scenarios through the analysis of technical information, observations and measurements

The qualification obtained is “Certificate of Knowledge in Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology for Technicians: the H2 fuel cell for transport applications”.
